Denver Joe Walker

Denver Joe Walker, age 90, loving father, grandfather, and uncle passed away Wednesday, July the 20th, at his home in Delta County. He was born October 12, 1920. He was one of four boys born to the late Ab and Vesper Walker. Denver has been a member of this community since 1937 when he came to Commerce to begin classes at East Texas State Teachers College. There he met and married Wanda Leah Thomas. Denver enlisted in the U. S. Army and served his country in four of the five major theatres in World War II. He was a Captain in General George Patton's infamous Third Army. He was in the Normandy Invasion, liberated France and in the Battle of the Bulge. He received four bronze stars and numerous other medals and honors while commanding his field artillery battalion. He was an expert marksman.

After being honorably discharged from the service, Denver began his 42 year long career with Texas Power & Light. He loved to be on his ranch, working his cattle, fishing for catfish in his lake and doing numerous odd jobs and projects with his tractor. Denver was very creative and innovative with an engineering talent which can be seen in almost any structure on his ranch.

Denver was preceded in death by his wife, Wanda, father and mother, Ab and Vesper and brothers, Lester, Jack, and Billy.

He is survived by his three children: Don Walker and wife Lynda of Mesquite, Donna Basham and husband, Lloyd, and Linda Anne Pine and husband Mike, both of Klondike.

Grandchildren are Jason Basham of Lewisville, Corey Jones and wife Rosemary of San Antonio, Adam Basham of Rowlett, and Daniel Pine and wife Daniele of Wylie.

Great Grandchildren include: Ashley Basham, Sarah and Tommy Jones, and Audree and Kennedy Rae Pine and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be on Friday, July 22, 2011, from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. at Jones-Walker & Son Funeral Home.

Funeral services are at the First Baptist Church in Commerce, Saturday, July the 23rd at 10:00 a.m.. Burial will be at Shiloh Cemetery.
