James Larry Adams

James Larry Adams (a.k.a. "Jamesie" or "Zeke"), 69, died peacefully at his Commerce home surrounded by his family on Sunday, November 16, 2008, of melanoma complications. A lifelong Democrat and member of the First Baptist Church, he was a father, grandfather, husband, brother, and friend whose genuine kindness and compassion touched all those who knew him. Memorial services will be at 3 PM on Wednesday, November 19, at Jones-Walker & Son Funeral Home in Commerce.

James was born in Commerce to John C. and Mary Kelly Adams on December 8, 1938. His forebears were Texas pioneers, and he had a lifelong interest in community affairs and local history. He was a graduate of Commerce High School and East Texas State University, and a volunteer fireman. As a Union Pacific Railroad Conductor, he was an active participant in the United Transportation Union. He also served in the Texas National Guard.

James is survived by his wife, Jan Woodward Adams; daughter, Karen (Gale Kvam), of West Lafayette, IN; daughter, Gayle, of Addison, TX; son, James Kelly (Diana) of Waldfeucht, Germany; grand-daughter, Audrey, of Waldfeucht, Germany; brother, Charles Jon (Paula), of Greenville, TX; sister, Carolyn Grant (Jim), of San Miguel de Allende, Mexico; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

James and Jan enjoyed travelling throughout the U.S. James maintained contact with many childhood friends and never missed a high school reunion. He believed in judging others only by the content of their character, and was committed to speaking out against injustice, inequality, and intolerance. He loved horses; the American West; the Texas Longhorns, New York Yankees, and Green Bay Packers; and most of all his family and friends. Until the end, James always put others' needs before his own. His passing diminishes all who knew him.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be sent to the Commerce Meals on Wheels program at PO Box 431, Commerce, TX 75429.
