Commerce, TX

James Arthur "Fat" Luckey, a beloved icon and friend to many in Commerce, Texas, passed away peacefully at the age of 92.  Known for his warm hospitality and unwavering optimism, James created a home that was a haven for all; a place to talk, share stories, enjoy a barbeque, or simply relax after a hard day's work.

Born with a generous heart and an unmatched work ethic, James spent his career at East Texas State University before retiring in 1995 and dedicating himself to a variety of odd jobs.  He never hesitated to do what needed to be done to provide for his family.

James was a devoted father to his eight children: seven boys and one girl, raising them with strength and love, even after the passing of his wife Florine in 2003.  He continued to hold his family together, embodying resilience and dedication.

To the community, James was more than a neighbor; he was a legend.  His door was always open, and his presence was a source of comfort and joy.  He witnessed and contributed to countless moments that enriched the lives of those around him.

James will be remembered for his kindness, his vibrant spirit, and his ability to bring people together.  He leaves behind a legacy of love, respect, and cherished memories.  He will be deeply missed but forever celebrated by all who had the privilege to know him.

His family left to cherish his memory is, his daughter Barbara Brown, sons: Leonard Ray Luckey, Larry Charles Luckey (Sheila), Victor Luckey (Diane), William Paul Luckey and Sherman Luckey (Katherine); brother John Earl Luckey (Minnie), sister-in-law Lorine Luckey, and a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren, great great grandchildren and great great great grandchildren.  He is also survived by many other family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents Henry and Ione Luckey, his wife Florine, sons: Michael Luckey and James Earl Luckey, sisters: Bobbie Jean Wilson, Shirley Culpepper and Josie Luckey; brothers: Robert Luckey, Erwin Buck Luckey, Robert James Luckey and LaCharles Luckey.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, February 8, 2025, at 2:00 P.M. at Mt. Moriah Baptist Church in Commerce with Rev. Bernice Heath officiating.  Burial will follow at Rosemound Cemetery.
