Jerry Don Smith, "Hook-Shot", 71, of Ladonia, Texas, passed away on Saturday, July 6, 2013, in Dallas. Jerry was the son of Earl and Carrie Smith. A native Texan, he was born on September 14, 1941, in Commerce, Texas. He graduated from Ladonia High School and in 1962 earned his B.A degree from East Texas State University in Commerce, Texas.
Jerry grew up in Ladonia, Texas. He attended Ladonia High School where he was an outstanding student who also excelled in all sports. Later Jerry served as a high school coach in Gober, Honey Grove and Winnsboro. Along with coaching Jerry spent many years teaching in the classroom. He loved and was loved by many of his students.
Jerry was not only a patriot who loved his country and the American way, but he had a servant's heart. He enjoyed helping many of his friends, family or anyone in need. His love for history extended beyond the classroom. Jerry spent many hours researching and writing booklets which will serve others for many years to come. Jerry was a brave person whose courage stands to serve us all by the way he handled his many health issues. He never complained or asked "Why me? ....." He just asked, "What will it take for me to get well?" and he took the challenge to overcome.
Jerry is survived by his sister, Kay Hall and husband Bob Hall; nephew Kyle Bramlett and family Deidre, Jackson and Samantha Bramlett. Other family members include Julie Carson, John Carson, Millie Kelly, Carla Shields, Robbie Holloway, Jo Crews and Joe Crews. Among his friends are Dave Weaver, Geary Gaston, Bob Hammel and his "classmates" who are his extended family.
Jerry was a member of the First Christian Church of Ladonia.
Jerry's personality was a gift within itself and all who knew him will forever remember the pleasure of his company.
Funeral services will be conducted on Wednesday, July 10, 2013, at 11:00 A.M. at First Baptist Church in Ladonia.
Visitation will be held beginning at 10:00 A.M. until service time.
Burial will follow at Ladonia Cemetery.
