John Wesley Verner, 98, entered heaven peacefully on Wednesday November 25, 2020 at his home in Cumby, TX. Graveside services will be held Saturday November 28, 2020 at Rosemound Cemetery, Commerce, TX beginning at 2:00 p.m. Mr. Verner was born in Chillicothe, TX on November 17, 1922 to Carl and Edith (Tiffee) Verner. He married Virginia Ruth Bartley Verner on August 3, 1943 and they raised 9 children. He worked as an ironworker constructing buildings all over Texas. He transitioned to construction of apartments and other buildings using his training as a master carpenter throughout the remainder of his working life. He was of the Baptist faith and a mason during his life. While working in Florida he met and married Shirley Shannon in April 1980 after relocating back in Texas. They enjoyed a 40-year marriage which included working on numerous construction projects in and around the Cedar Creek Lake community. After retiring from carpentry work, he and Shirley built their final home in Cumby where they enjoyed their annual garden, chickens, ducks, blackberries, and plums along with “Donkey Bill.” Their time together was filled with the love and laughter of many grand and great-grandchildren spending time with them inside and outside of their home. Survivors include his wife of Cumby, TX; sons Ray (Patricia) Verner of Broken Arrow, OK; Randy (Nan) Verner of Mt. Pleasant, TX; Gary Don Verner of Rowlett, TX; and John (Michelle) Verner of Josephine, TX; daughters Melinda Manley of Greenville, TX; Virginia (Gary) Hurse of Decatur, TX; Debbie (Gary) Nichols of Ladonia, TX; Nancy (Robert) Lake of Greenville, TX; and Barbara (Dave) Ingram of Cumby, TX; daughter in law Rose Verner of Kemp, TX; sister Becky Hester of Greenville, TX; brother in law and sister in law, Jim and Shirley Shannon of Tampa, FL along with 24 grandchildren and 51 great grandchildren as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, son Wesley Verner, brothers Delton Verner and Bill Verner, sisters Armine Sams and Pauline Farmer, daughter in law Donna Verner, daughter Willa Cody and first wife Virginia Verner. Grandsons will be the pallbearers for the service.
