Martha Lynn Cunningham

Martha Lynn McClendon Cunningham, 82, of Cumby entered into her heavenly home on Wednesday, February 22, 2023 with her family at her side in Cumby.  Martha was born on May 23, 1940 in Commerce to William Homer McClendon and Harriett Roselee MacManus McClendon.  She was married Claude Eugene Cunningham on December 23, 1978.

Although she was born in Commerce, she traveled and lived all over the United States since she was a Navy wife.  She settled back in Cumby in 1978.  Martha liked to quilt like her mother taught her.  She loved to garden.  She liked arts and crafts, which she was good at.  Martha enjoyed helping her husband Gene take care of their cattle.  Martha and her sister Rebecca Jo started out singing together when they were very young.  They both had talent for music and singing and were self taught.  They traveled far and near with the church groups singing and playing their instruments.  Martha played piano, accordian and the organ.  She had these in her home and used to entertain her friends and family.  She also song and played with her brother Dewey, who played the guitar.  The neighbors use to coaxe Martha and Jo into singing when they were very small by giving them a nickel or dime.  They had a swing on a tree outside their house and they would get out there and swing and sing.  They were shy and they would stop when they noticed the neighbors were outside listening to them sing.  The neighbors called them little songbirds.

Martha is survived by her daughter Robin Lynn Jones of Cumby, TX; son Billy Mac Cunningham of Winston Salem, NC; grandchildren: Colten Hunter Cunningham of Cumby, TX, Dalton Lee Cunningham and Madeline Rose Cunningham both of Winston Salem, NC; sister Rebecca Jo Jackson of Richland Hills, TX.  She is also survived by numerous neices, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a son Terry Dale Jones; a sister Mary Jane Bradford and brothers: Richard William McClendon, Jessie Junior McClendon and Dewey Fred McClendon

Visitation will be held Sunday February 26, 2023 from 2:00 PM until 3:00 PM.  A graveside service will follow at Rosemound Cemetery.
