Martha Truax

Martha Huff Truax passed away at the age of 90 at 10:20 p.m. on Tuesday December 15, 2009, in Presbyterian Hospital of Plano.

Mrs. Truax is survived by her only daughter, Ellen Truax and was preceded in death by her husband, William Ellsworth Truax, Jr.


Mrs.. Truax was born on March 19, 1919 in Denison, Texas to Ann Mansfield Huff and George W. Huff. She was valedictorian in her graduating class at Malakoff High School in 1936 and she subsequently attended the University of Texas at Austin also graduating with honors. Mrs. Truax received her Masters degree in Spanish from the University of Texas and taught Spanish in the public schools in South Texas. After her husband returned from service in World War II she worked in Madison, Wisconsin while Dr. Truax obtained his Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin.


Mrs.. Truax and Dr. Truax moved to Commerce, Texas in 1950 when Dr. Truax accepted employment at East Texas State Teachers College. Mrs. Truax obtained a second masters degree in Library Science from East Texas State and worked as a librarian in the East Texas State Library, 1969-1981.

Mrs. Truax retired in 1981 to take care of Dr. Truax who had retired 3 years earlier for health reasons. Mrs. Truax was a loyal contributor to many worthy charities and was an active member of the First United Methodist Church in Commerce, Texas.


Known as Martha to her friends, Ms. Truax was a compassionate and caring person whose sincere regard for others was her most endearing quality. She loved books and reading and enjoyed participating in book discussion groups. Martha was also very interested in religion and read widely to enrich herself with many different points of view. Martha remained an optimist throughout her life and enjoyed sending cards to friends. Her delightful way with words evoked laughter and made her conversations a joy to all who were fortunate enough to know her. Her generous support and unselfish nature will be remembered with fondness and deeply missed.

Visitation will be held Friday at 10 a.m. at Jones-Walker & Sons Funeral Home in Commerce, Texas, followed by a graveside service at Brigham Cemetery at 11 a. m. The funeral procession will depart from Jones-Walker & Sons Funeral Home immediately following the visitation.. A reception will be held at Mak's Place on the Square following the service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be sent to the Friends of the Commerce Public Library, Commerce, Texas.
