Oneta George McCarty

July 26, 1925 — February 13, 2023

Commerce,TX

Oneta Faye George McCarty, 97, of Commerce and Lone Oak, went to her eternal rest Feb.13. 2023 at Christus Mother Francis Hospital in Sulphur Springs, Tx of natural causes. She was of the Baptist faith. She was born in Cooper, Delta County, Tx on July 26, 1925 to Lucy Lou Verda Webb and Zekiel Homer George, one of 11 children. She graduated from Cooper High School in 1943.

She married Christopher C. McCarty of Cooper on Dec 4, 1943.They were married for 52 years before his death. During the years her husband served in the Army during WWII, Oneta worked at various jobs in Dallas. Upon his return in 1946, they settled in Klondike, moving to Commerce in 1948. She worked at a sewing factory in Commerce for many years and was an original employee of American Wood and retired after 33 years. She was a resident of Commerce for the remainder of her life until her health concerns necessitated a move to live with her daughter in Lone Oak. During her time in Lone Oak, she developed new friendships with a group known as The Wood Shed Family. She was a welcomed addition to the group and enjoyed participating in many discussions as well as playing cards and dominoes. To the group, she was “Granny.”

Oneta loved to play cards, dominoes, visit family, and take trips with her siblings and children. She helped with Toys for Tots for many years, loved the silent auction for the Northeast Texas Children’s Museum, was the epitome of “showing up” for activities involving her grandchildren and great-grands, traveled with her siblings, and took a yearly trip with her children and their spouses.

Her life was of full of adventure and fun. Her life can be summed up in her reply when asked if she enjoyed zip-lining across Palo Duro Canyon at age 92 – “I want to do it again. It was fun, but just didn’t last long enough.” She was preceded in death by her husband (1996), her parents, five brothers, four sisters, three nephews, and one niece.

She is survived by five children:  Bobbie Smith (George) of Emmet, AR; Janet Catchings (John) of Carrollton; Mike McCarty (Marsha) of Kamay; Trish Wood (Charles) of Lone Oak; Tommy McCarty (Kim) of Commerce; ten grandchildren: Jennifer Flanagan, Jessica Burkey, Julie Arrington, Caren Catchings, Michael McCarty, Sara Rangel, Wayne Sloan, Zeke McCarty, Ashley Rex, and Jake McCarty; 21 great-grandchildren; four great great-grand children; sister Etha McAllister of Tyler; sisters-in-law Betty George and Dolly George of Oklahoma; numerous nieces and nephews of the George and McCarty family; and the Lone Oak Wood Shed Family.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, February 19 at Jones-Walker Funeral Home in Commerce; burial to follow at Horton Cemetery, Delta County.  Family visitation one hour prior to the services. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Northeast Texas Children’s Museum or Commerce Toys for Tots.
