Velma Evans, 92, formerly of Cumby, passed away Sunday, October 25, 2020, in Kemp, Texas. She was born Velma Geraldine Evans, the daughter of John W. Smith and Minnie A. Denton Smith on December 4, 1927, in Cumby, Tx. She took on the nickname "Jerry" and was called this to all that knew her. Jerry was the youngest of 11 children, a position that suited her just fine. She loved telling stories about her childhood and talking about the hard times they had and the long hours of hard work that they had to endure. She admittedly was the one who "got away with a lot" thanks to her being the baby of the family. Rumor has it that she may have even taken on the role of "tattletale" from time to time. Jerry married Robert (Bob) Evans, also of Cumby on September 12, 1948 and they remained life partners until his passing in 2003. She loved the outdoors and camping and fishing were some of her favorite pastimes. In fact, she was known to wet a hook even when she was 90 years old and her favorite meal was fried fish (preferably ones she had caught). She was a member of Liberty Baptist Church in Gun Barrel City. Jerry retired from working in the school cafeteria at Mabank High School. She will be remembered as being quite a character and had a life of the party type personality.
She is survived by a son, Phillip Evans and wife Toni of Stephenville, Tx. two daughters: Pat Evans Fausnight and husband Don of Trinidad, Tx. , and Linda Acker and husband Dee of Childress, Tx. Other survivors include her grandchildren: Melissa Bass of Ft. Worth, Jason Bass of Ft. Worth, Crystal Cozad of Alvarado, and Shane Teer of Mexia and her great grandchildren: Caleb Overbo of Baltimore, Md., Dylan Bass of Ft. Worth, and Maddison Bass of Ft. Worth. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Bob, a granddaughter Michelle Evans, and her 5 brothers and 5 sisters.
Funeral Services for Mrs. Evans will be held Friday, October 30, 2020 at the Jones-Walker Funeral Chapel in Commerce, Tx. Visitation will be at 1:00 p.m. and the service will follow at 2:00 p.m. with Steve Bass officiating and Jason Bass, Shane Teer, Greg Cozad, Dylan Bass, Don Fausnight, and Dee Acker serving as pallbearers. Interment will be at Sunny Point Cemetery in Cumby.
